Building a Prone Position:

The descriptions in this section are for right handed shooters, if the reader is left handed the instructions should be changed from left to right and visa versa.

The first time a person attempts to use a rifle with a jacket and sling they should always be helped by a committee member or coach.

The 'standard' method

The following steps describe how to get into prone position with a jacket and sling:

  1. Stand off the end of the mat facing the rifle

  2. Step forward and kneel down before lying down next to the rifle. Place the left elbow on the grip section of the mat

  3. Pick up the rifle with the right hand keeping it pointing down the range towards the target at all times

  4. Hook the sling into the clip on the handstop using the left hand

  5. Place the left elbow near the front left edge of the mat

  6. Place the left hand above the sling but below the stock. The sling should be fixed to the upper arm and should wrap underneath the back of the left hand

  7. Raise the butt of the rifle into the right shoulder

  8. Adjust the body so that the rifle is level and move the left hand and elbow forward until the sling is taught, The hand underneath the rifle should be just touching the handstop and not pressed up against it too hard. The angle of the left arm should be equal on either side of the elbow and the left hand adjusted under the stock until it is comfortable.

  9. Place the right hand on the pistol grip and keep the index finger on the stock. Do not put the finger on the trigger whilst getting into position

  10. Extend the right elbow to the right of the body until it feels comfortable. For high positions it will be close to the body, for low positions it will be further away.

  11. Lower the head so the cheek rests against the cheek piece of the rifle and the eye is looking through the centre of the rear sight
